The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works provides a Spatial Information Library for CAD and GIS data.  The data is not loaded from this Data Portal, but can be viewed by visiting the link below.

Download GIS files in ArcView shapefile format and examine their metadata.

DGN Downloads
Search using an address, street intersections or thomas guide pages. Navigate to a desired location with the zoom tool to download our house numbering and index maps in microstation design file format (DGN). Locate multiple DGN files for a specific region.

Some layers included (this is not an exhaustive list):   catch basin retrofits, governmental units, hydrography, soil types, sewer, storm drains and street lights.

Aerial Imagery (2001)

This aerial imagery was captured in 2001 in a cooperative project between the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and Regional Planning.

It represents the initial imagery capture by the County of Los Angeles, which later become the Los Angeles Regional Imagery Acquisition Consortium (LAR-IAC).

Three imagery resolutions were captured:

  • 1 foot imagery in Urban Areas
  • 1 Meter imagery for the urban/forest interface
  • 2 meter imagery for the national forest.

Catch Basin Retrofits

Abstract:
Catch basins retrofitted with manually retractable screen (MRS), automatic retractable screen (ARS) or fixed basket insert (FBI). 
Purpose:
To identify and locate catch basins with retrofit for inspection purposes. This is to ensure that they are functioning properly during a storm event.

Debris Basin – Point Location

Abstract:
Debris Basins are key components of the Los Angeles County Flood Control District’s flood control system. Typically located at the mouths of canyons, debris basins capture sediment, gravel, boulders, and vegetative debris that are washed out of the canyons during storms but allow water to flow into the downstream storm drain system, thereby protecting drainage systems and communities in lower-lying watershed areas from possible flooding and property damage. The debris basin itself consists of an earth dam or other barrier constructed across a drainageway or other suitable location for collecting sediment. The dam is provided with properly designed spillways to dispose of excess runoff water at safe velocities that will not damage the dam or other improvements. The sediment basin is a small pool of water through which the runoff from the adjacent land must flow. As the silt-laden runoff flows through the pool, it slows down and loses its capacity to carry the larger silt particles, which drop out into the pool.

Abstract:
The debris basin right of way depicts the limits of ownership or access rights in fee or ease within the facility. The debris basin itself consists of an earth dam or other barrier constructed across a drainageway or other suitable location for collecting sediment. The dam is provided with properly designed spillways to dispose of excess runoff water at safe velocities that will not damage the dam or other improvements. The sediment basin is a small pool of water through which the runoff from the adjacent land must flow. As the silt-laden runoff flows through the pool, it slows down and loses its capacity to carry the larger silt particles, which drop out into the pool.

Spreading Grounds

Abstract:
This data set contains Los Angeles County spreading ground data as provided by the LA County Public Works Department (Water Resources). The use of water conservation facilities adjacent to river channels and in soft-bottom channels permits water to percolate into groundwater basins for later pumping. These water spreading facilities are located in areas where the underlying soils are composed of permeable formations and in hydraulic connection with the underlying aquifer. The various types of water conserved, local, imported, and reclaimed are construed to have the following meanings – Local water is primarily runoff due to rainfall on the mountain and valley watersheds, dam releases, and rising water within the County. Imported water is water originating outside the County either from Northern California or from the Colorado River. Reclaimed water is the effluent produced by the Whittier Narrows Water Reclamation Plant, the San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant, and the Pomona Water Reclamation Plant, all operated by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. The importance of this activity is apparent when it is realized that about 30 to 40 percent of the water used in the County is pumped from groundwater supplies. The growth of the County, combined with periodic droughts, has seriously depleted these supplies on numerous occasions. The Department of Public Work’s policy is to conserve the maximum possible amount of storm water consistent with runoff quantity and quality, capacities of the spreading facilities, and groundwater conditions.

Boundaries of sub watersheds or watershed sub areas. Original areas were drawn on U.S.G.S. 7 ½ minute, 1:24,000 scale topo quad sheets by Hydraulic Water Conservation Division. Digitized into ComputerVision CADDS4 by Environmental Programs Division (EPD). Converted to Atlas GIS Atlas Graphic Format (.agf) by EPD. Cleaned up, topology built, downstream connectivity developed in Atlas GIS. Converted to ArcView Shape (.shp) by EPD.

House Numbering Map Grid

Each grid in the Index Map was divided into 25 grids to create the House Numbering (HN) Map. The grids in the HN map are 3000 ft high and 4000 ft wide. The Mat_No refers to the House Numbering Grid and the IM_No refers to the Index Map grid.

Abstract:
The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts spearheaded the SDI to tie all of the sources of information together for the benefit of local cities, county, regional authorities, and environmental interest groups.
 
Purpose:
The Storm Drain Initiative (SDI) is a cooperative effort to develop and maintain a complete geographical information systems (GIS) layer of the storm water management infrastructure within Los Angeles County. The storm drain systems within the county are owned, operated, and maintained by multiple jurisdictions. Because of this, information on the location, status, and connectivity of storm drain structures is segmented.
