This dataset presents areas where an additional factor should be used to reduce risk to property and life in the event of an earthquake. The near-source maps are based on research in which most buildings that collapse or have severe damage after an earthquake are located within five kilometers (three miles) of fault rupture. Based on this research, seismologists and engineers recommend additional reinforcement of buildings located within a few kilometers of historical ground ruptures. This dataset will be used to determine where additional reinforcement to buildings should take place in the County of Los Angeles.
